Arkadiusz "Arek" Gepchard

Arkadiusz “Arek” Gepchard is a Polish fine-art photographer and visual artist based in France. His practice focuses on staged self-portraiture, humorous surrealism and conceptual photography. Using theatrical makeup, costumes and handmade props — often created from ordinary or discarded objects — he constructs carefully staged images in which humor and absurdity become a way of addressing serious subjects.

His photographs explore human nature, identity, time, fear, freedom, responsibility and the contradictions of everyday life. Many of the works begin with a simple idea, phrase or object and gradually develop into visual narratives that balance irony with reflection. The image may first provoke a smile, but behind the humor there is usually a second layer that invites the viewer to look more closely.

Gepchard works primarily with himself as the central figure in his photographs, transforming the self-portrait into a theatrical and symbolic space. Rather than documenting reality, he creates fictional situations in which the body, objects and gestures become elements of a visual language.

Photography is his way of transforming personal observations, thoughts and questions into images. Humor and absurdity are not an escape from serious themes, but the language through which he chooses to speak about them.
